Beware - Watch What You Are Saying!

"Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips." Psalm 141:3

How are you doing with your speech and your behavior around your spouse and family? How would the Lord rate you on your thoughts, attitude and your speech while you are at home, or at work, at church, or by yourself? Who are you really in your heart? Remember, the Lord knows and sees everything. You cannot hide anything, so who are you kidding?

"For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned." Matthew 12:34-37

Are you letting your hair down in front of your children, saying hurtful things about your spouse and family members who may be choosing sides? Remember, your children are wounded, hurting and are dealing with a lot of pain and fear by having one spouse gone or hearing the arguing in your home. Should we not treat our family better than anyone else? But are you? Listen to yourself. How do you sound?

"May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer." Psalm 19:14

How many people do you know that come into the office and say, "Don't talk to me this morning, I am having a bad day?" Do people at work know you are a Christian or do you blend in and talk like everyone else? Do you put on another mask when you go to church and act like you are suppose to act all the time?

Let me ask you, would you say all the things about your spouse you are saying to someone else in person or on the telephone if your spouse was standing there? Imagine that your spouse received one of your email by accident, would you be embarrassed?  What do you think the Lord is thinking about all that you are saying with your mouth and tongue about your circumstances and your spouse?

"When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise. The tongue of the righteous is choice silver, but the heart of the wicked is of little value." Proverbs 10:19-20

Standers, we are to be different! We receive mail every day telling us that you have accepted Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord of your life since your marriage crisis. God is already moving in your life! I pray that you will find a church where you can grow in the Lord. Your Lord wants to be first in your life, then your spouse, children and career.

Your flesh has been deeply wounded, as you have been rejected by so many cutting and hurting words from your spouse. The most important lesson that you can learn now is to learn how to control your own tongue and don't have a war with words with your spouse at any time! No one wins, but satan is laughing at how he can push your buttons ever so quickly. You must take captive your thoughts and words and make them obedient to our Lord Jesus Christ in all circumstances.

"Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you." Ephesians 4:29-32

You do not have to speak every word or thought that comes across your mind. In fact, every day you do not have to say many things that come across your mind about others or even about your employer. How often do you speak everything that pops into your brain to your children or spouse? Don't! Sift it and discard the junk before you speak. Ask the Holy Spirit to cleanse you and your spouse from all impurities of your body, soul and spirit. Take captive your thoughts and your tongue! Remember, self-control is one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit.

"A man of knowledge uses words with restraint, and a man of understanding is even-tempered. Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and discerning if he holds his tongue." Proverbs 17:27-28

Let us choose to be wise in our speech. Have you ever listened with your ears how people talk and what they say to others? Have you listened to how children or teens in junior and senior high talk? Where did they learn this from, home? You and I have a choice every day on how we speak with our mouth. How often do you say something that you know you should not have said it? Have you had the Holy Spirit knock at your heart's door and say, "You should not have said that? That was gossip, that was rude or crude." Repent immediately and if possible go back to the person and say, "I am sorry, I should not have said that, forgive me." You will become a witness for your Lord.

Ask the Holy Spirit to purify you from all unrighteousness. May both your walk and your talk show love to your spouse who may be very unlovable at this moment. Choose to radiate the love and the godly character and speech that your children need to witness and learn in your daily walk with your Lord. Your Lord, your spouse, and your loved ones will see you grow and radiate the love of Christ in your speech, in your behavior, and in your actions. Let's be different, let's watch out what we say all the time to everyone! By the way, that also includes texting!

"He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity." Proverbs 21:12
