What Are You Reading?

"How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you." Psalm 119:9-11

What are you reading this summer? I know of many people who are reading new Christian books. Are you a TV watcher or do you sit at your computer for hours reading and chatting? May I be your accountability partner today and ask, "How much time do you spend reading your Bible daily or doing a Bible study?"

As I think back 30 years ago, (five years before Bob moved out) I remember how busy I was as a woman in my mid-thirties with three growing children, a full-time career, a husband who was very successful and busy. We were also active in our local church. I was so busy that I did not have a special time of reading and studying my Bible. Yes, I prayed, but simple "Bless me" or "Help me" prayers. I never even knew about the Armor of God. If only I had known the Word of God as I do now. Please learn from my mistakes. Where are you today in knowing the Bible?

"Let me understand the teaching of your precepts; then I will meditate on your wonders. My soul is weary with sorrow; strengthen me according to your word." Psalm 119:27-28

July is here! The summer days are slipping by quickly. Do you read the book of Proverbs monthly or regularly? If you have not read the book of Proverbs recently, may I challenge you to do so this month as there are 31 days in July. I get startled and upset every time I read Proverbs chapters 5-7.

I pray that you will be burdened and weep for all the men and women who have fallen into the trap of adultery and do not see the way out. They do not understand where their road of destruction is leading them. May you and I never stop praying and pleading with our Lord daily for all the prisoners of adultery to be set free from the bondage of sin that has them so entangled, blinded and deceived that they do not see the way out.

Would you also pray that men of God would preach the book of Proverbs to their people for the warning that our churches need to hear? May I suggest as you read this scripture below that you will pray against the Spirit of Whoredoms which includes adultery, but also pray against the Spirit of Bondage which includes addictions to alcohol, drugs, pornography and soul ties. You need to pray for all soul ties to be broken, severed, crushed and destroyed in your husband's or wife's life with any ungodly relationships. This will help your husband or wife to be one step closer to be able to say to the other person, "I am going home."

I heard this week, that a stander was able to talk and pray with the other person in her husband's life. The Lord wants to remove all men and women who are blinded by the enemy of what they are doing in destroying a marriage. God will never bless their adulterous relationship.

"With persuasive words she led him astray; she seduced him with her smooth talk. All at once he followed her like an ox going to the slaughter, like a deer stepping into a noose till an arrow pierces his liver, like a bird darting into a snare, little knowing it will cost him his life. Now then, my sons, listen to me; pay attention to what I say. Do not let your heart turn to her ways or stray into her paths. Many are the victims she has brought down; her slain are a mighty throng. Her house is a highway to the grave, leading down to the chambers of death." Proverbs 7:21-27

Every day we receive email and letters asking for advice. I pray that you will learn that your Lord God wants you to come to Him and ask Him what you should do about your problem. God does speak to His children. We hear about the testimonies of our Lord speaking to His children every week.

"The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: for attaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight." Proverbs 1:1-2

The Book of Proverbs is a collection of biblical nuggets of wisdom, and brief wise sayings, based on God's perspective on life. The truth contained in these Proverbs are intended to make us stop and think, and hopefully to redirect our lives by providing wisdom and understanding. The wisdom begins with humble submission to the Lord in every part of our life.

"For acquiring a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and just and fair; for giving prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young--let the wise listen and add to their learning and let the discerning get guidance." Proverbs 1:3-5

One way that you can be sure to get these spiritual truths and nuggets of gold is by reading one chapter of Proverbs each day of the month. They will affect your thinking and behavior in powerful ways, strengthening your heart for the Lord and your obedience in honoring Him with your life. The Book of Proverbs is a textbook for instructing us how to have a happy and successful life by avoiding the traps of sin.

"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline." Proverbs 1:6

May our prayer be that every one of our spouses and loved ones who are away from the Lord would read these nuggets of gold. It would save each of them so much heartache, pain, and the suffering of consequences from their sins. The Book of Proverbs emphasizes that God has standards of right and wrong. May I challenge you to read one or two verses a day to your children.

When I read the Bible, I think so often, "Oh, that every person would read these truths so that they may receive God's wisdom and knowledge for their own personal life." You hear about so many new Christians reading the Word and the awe that they have for their Lord God. Pray that your spouse will hunger and thirst for the Word of God. It will change their heart and life completely.

"So is my Word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it." Isaiah 55:11

Don't forget my challenge, now go read a Chapter in Proverbs! May I urge you to try to read a chapter of Proverbs, a Psalm and a chapter in the New Testament every day. In fact, rotate between the chapters in the Old and the New Testament as you grow in the Lord. If you do not have enough time, try a half chapter each day. You will be surprised at what you learn, how you will be encouraged, and the blessings you will receive by reading, learning and growing in the Lord.

God bless,
